South Korean LG Electronics is launching an online apps store in Asia tomorrow with plans to expand it globally by year-end -- in an attempt to follow the success of rival Apple's App Store.
LG, the world's No. 3 phone maker behind Nokia and Samsung, said that its "LG Application Store" would offer 1,400 applications including 100 free programs, available in 15 languages.
The online store will first be launched in Asia-Pacific countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Australia and will reach Europe and South America by the end of this year.
LG has not set plans to launch the marketplace in the United States, the stronghold of Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry.
Microsoft, Nokia, Research in Motion and Verizon have all announced similar intentions and are racing to match the success of Apple's App Store.
