Smartphone maker Research In Motion has launched a new social network service for its BlackBerry App World store -- hoping to help grow its online marketplace virally and gain ground on rival Apple's popular App Store.
The Waterloo-based company said the new site, called "MyBlackBerry," will gives users a venue to share opinions and about their favorite applications and accessories, and share tips and tricks for using their devices.Users will also be able to complain about their experiences -- providing the company with valuable feedback to improve their smartphones. The site will look more like a bulletin board than a true social network, such as Facebook. It will be personalized so users can connect with others using the same BlackBerry devices. Apple's App Store has more than 50,000 applications and over a billion downloads, while the BlackBerry App World store, which has been slow to take off, only has about 2,000 applications. RIM hopes the new social aspect of the site will virally grow its online marketplace.
