Verizon, the nation's largest wireless carrier, said its second-quarter profit fell 21 percent but demand for mobile phones were holding up well in the recession.
The company said its second-quarter profit dropped to $3.16 billion from $3.4 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.
It added 1.1 million customers in the quarter for a total of 87.7 million subscribers -- ahead of rival AT&T's 79.6 million.
AT&T added more customers in the quarter -- 1.37 million -- as Apple's iPhone continued to be a top choice for consumers willing to spend a premium on wireless service.
