AT&T, the second-largest U.S. carrier, said the Solstice has a 3.0-inch touch screen with a virtual, landscape QWERTY keyboard. A slight vibration feedback lets users know when they've accurately press a virtual button.
An accelerometer automatically detects motion and the orientation of the device -- for autorotation of the display, motion sensing games and photo scrolling by tilting the handset.
Running on Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, users can add "widgets" to access frequently used applications such as Facebook and MySpace.
It comes with a 2.0-megapixel camera, MP3 player, video and audio streaming, preloaded games, Bluetooth technology and a microSD memory card slot supporting up to 16GB.
The Solstice also includes high-speed 3G Internet and access to AT&T's services such as Mobile Music and Navigator.
"The sleek, compact Solstice brings a rich web browsing and instant access to your favorite social networking sites through widgets and Samsung's innovative TouchWiz user experience," said Omar Khan, Samsung's vice president.
AT&T said the Samsung Solstice will be available beginning August 2 for $100 with an two-year contract.
