Sprint, the No. 3 U.S. mobile service provider, said it will start selling Samsung phones with advanced AM-OLED screens -- offering longer battery life and improved video and photo images -- in the fourth quarter.
The Overland Park, Kan.-based carrier said it plans to introduce Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, or AM-OLED, in its high-end phones for better video viewing.
"That's typically more in a high-end phone," said David Owens, Sprint's director of customer acquisition. "It won't be across the portfolio."
Most handset still have screens based on Liquid Crystal Display technology since AM-OLED is relatively new and manufacturing costs are higher.
But Samsung is pushing the advantages of AM-OLED, which shows colors more vividly and conserves battery life as screens do not need a backlight.
"The vibrancy of the screen is world class," said Owens. "Consumers are willing to pay more as long as they're getting value."
The Samsung Impression, sold by No. 2 U.S. carrier AT&T, is currently the only AM-OLED Samsung device available in the U.S. market.
