Social-networking service Twitter is launching a new location-based feature that lets people see where "tweets" are coming from and follow microbloggers by neighborhood or city.
Users interested in publishing their whereabouts will need to activate the new feature -- which will be disabled by default. Twitter said the location data will only be stored temporarily.
"It's easy to imagine how this might be interesting in an event like a concert or something more dramatic like an earthquake," said Biz Stone, Twitter's co-founder.
The service will be available in the next two or three weeks.
