Samsung said it will launch an online store for smartphone applications on September 14 starting in Europe, joining a growing trend of handset makers following the success of Apple's App Store.
The world's second-largest mobile phone maker said its store will open in the U.K., France and Italy with more than 30 countries including Germany and Spain to follow in the coming months.
The company is developing similar services in the U.S. and Asia but hasn't said when it will be available.
Samsung said its app store will initially offer about 300 programs and grow to around 2,000 by the end of the year.
Phone makers worldwide are following the success of Apple's App Store, launching their own online stores where users can download software and content.
Nokia opened the Ovi store globally in May and LG released its online marketplace in Asia in July.
Microsoft, Research in Motion, Palm and even Verizon have all announced similar intentions of their own stores.
