AT&T said Windows Mobile users will get free Wi-Fi from its nationwide network of hotspots -- including all Starbucks locations -- starting September 14.
The Atlanta-based carrier said that customers with Windows Mobile devices will need to install special software and have certain data plans to qualify for free access. It already offers a similar deal for its iPhone and BlackBerry users. As smartphones sales rise, service providers have been aggressively upgrading their networks to anticiapate the increased data use. AT&T has been rolling out its new 3G band for better high-speed coverage. In March, Sprint teamed up with Clearwire to launch 4G service in 10 cities. Verizon also announced plans to offer 4G in 2010. T-Mobile has been slow to follow and is still building its 3G network. Earlier today, Microsoft announced plans to release new Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones on October 6.
