Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Xperia X2, a Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone with a SlideView feature that shows frequently used phone activities, missed incoming activity, emails and text messages.
The company said the Xperia X2 runs on Microsoft's new Windows Mobile 6.5 platform and features such a redesigned Internet Explorer Mobile browser with Flash support, access to Windows Marketplace for Mobile and Microsoft's "My Phone" Web backup service. In addition, it has Sony Ericsson features such as "3D panels" -- preloaded with 14 with another 16 available for download -- that offer quick access programs such as Skype, Google, CNN and Windows Live. It also comes with a 3.2-inch WVGA touch screen display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 8.1-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and high-speed HSDPA access, Google Maps for Mobile and a microSD expansion slot. "The Xperia X2 allows users to work quickly and efficiently while on the move," said Sumit Malhotra, Sony Ericsson's marketing business manager. "It features a new range of interactive panels as well as SlideView -- perfect for those who need to see any missed incoming activity at a glance." Microsoft announced its new Windows Mobile 6.5 platform earlier this week, saying the new smartphones will begin to hit store shelves on October 6. HTC also unveiled its Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone, the Touch2, today. Sony Ericsson has been struggling in recent years -- reporting a $398 million second-quarter loss -- giving market share to rivals Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry. Still, the company hopes to win back customers by shifting its focus from its Walkman and Cyber-Shot sub-brands to more higher-end smartphones, even planning a range of devices integrating Sony's PlayStation games console. Sony Ericsson said the Xperia X2 will be available in the fourth quarter.
