AT&T began selling the MicroCell -- a device that boosts indoor cellular and 3G data coverage -- in Charlotte as its first test trial of femtocell technology.
The company said the MicroCell uses a customer's home Internet service to connect handsets within the home to AT&T's network.
It has a coverage rangs of over 5,000 square feet for up to 10 phone lines.
Calls starting on the device shifts over to the nearest tower when users leave home. Calls originating outside cannot transfer to the MicroCell.
Sprint and Verizon have been selling femtocell hardware but AT&T's device handles not only calls, but also boosts 3G data sessions.
AT&T is selling the device only in the Charlotte, North Carolina for $150.
