Palm today released the lastest version of its WebOS software for the Pre smartphone, adding a number of new features and fixing several security issues, but not regaining access to Apple's iTunes.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said WebOS 1.2 will arrive as an over-the-air update to the Pre over the next few days.
There are dozens of tweaks and changes with virtually every app and service improved.
Notable features include the ability to buy songs from Amazon's MP3 store over a phone connection instead of just Wi-Fi, integration with LinkedIn and support for copy, and paste in Web pages and email.
However, the update doesn't re-establish the Pre's connection with Apple's iTunes.
The handset was launched as an iPhone competitor and became the first non-Apple device that could connect to iTunes directly -- by spoofing the USB code for an iPod or iPhone.
The tit-and-tat battle between the the two companies over the issue has required the USB Implementers Forum, an industry standards group, to step in -- ruling in favor of Apple.
A full list of features and the download can be found on the Palm Web site.
