T-Mobile to Launch Samsung Behold 2, Google-Powered Phone

T-Mobile said it plans to launch the Samsung Behold 2, a Google-powered smartphone with an AMOLED touch screen display and 5.0-megapixel auto-focus camera, this holiday season.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier said the Behold 2, successor to the Behold released last year, has a large 3.2-inch AMOLED touch screen display.

It runs on Google's Android platform and comes with the Internet search giant's services such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Talk as well as thousands of applications and games from Android Market.

Similar to T-Mobile's other Google phones from HTC and Motorola -- the T-Mobile G1, T-Mobile MyTouch 3G and upcoming Motorola Cliq -- the Behold 2 is added with the handset maker's own user interface.

Using Samsung's TouchWiz UI, consumers can customize three home screens with widgets and applications then quickly flip through with Samsung's "cube" menu.

Additional features include a 5.0-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, MP3 player, Bluetooth 2.1, HSDPA and Wi-Fi and up to 16GB of external memory from microSD cards.

"T-Mobile continues to expand our line-up of Android-powered phones in time for the holiday season with the addition of the Samsung Behold 2," said Travis Warren, T-Mobile's director of product marketing. "The premium screen and quality camera coupled with Samsung's innovative cube menu makes the Behold 2 a multimedia powerhouse."

In June, Samsung said it would shift its focus on the advantages of AMOLED screens. AMOLED, which stands for active-matrix organic light emitting diode, is thinner, has better image quality and consumes less power than traditional displays.

T-Mobile did not announce a specific release date or price for the Samsung Behold 2 but said that it would launch during the holiday season.
