Sprint to Release the Samsung Moment, Google-Powered Phone

Wed Oct 07, 2009 2:44 pm

Sprint said it will release the Samsung Moment, a Google-powered smartphone with a large 3.2-inch AMOLED touch screen display and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, on November 1 for $180.

The Overland Park, Kan.-based carrier said that the Moment runs on the Internet search giant's Android operating system for services such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Talk -- similar to Samsung's other Google phones such as the Behold 2 and Galaxy for T-Mobile.

Users can also download applications and games from Android Market.

Sprint also provides services such as Sprint TV with live and on-demand programming, Sprint Music Store to buy and download songs and NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile to watch sports.

Additional features include a 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, MP3 player, Bluetooth 2.1, high-speed Internet through Wi-Fi and EV-DO Rev. A and up to 32GB of external memory from microSD cards.

"With a full QWERTY keyboard, Samsung Moment allows customers to easily access the thousands of applications available in the Android Market," said Kevin Packingham, Sprint's senior vice president of product development. "This is the second Android product that will be available from Sprint this holiday season."

In June, Samsung said it would shift its focus to thinnerAMOLED screens for better image quality and less power consumption over traditional displays.

Sprint said the Samsung Moment will be released on November 1 for $180 with a two-year contract.
