Verizon Wireless plans to sell the HTC Droid Eris, a Google Android device, on November 6 for $100, putting pressure on rival Sprint.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier said the Droid Eris is nearly identical to HTC's Hero smartphone, which Sprint currently sells for $180.
The Droid Eris runs on HTC's Sense interface for a seven-panel home screen with customizable widgets. Users can access text messages, emails and call history and even Facebook updates from a single contact card.
It also features a 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen, GPS, digital compass, gravity-sensor, 3.5mm stereo headset jack, a 5.0-megapixel auto-focus camera and expandable microSD memory.
The handset joins Verizon's other Android devices -- such as the highly-anticipated Motorola Droid, which also goes on sale November 6.
Last month, Verizon teamed up with Google to develop and sell Android-powered devices -- an attempt to win back ground lost to AT&T and Apple's iPhone.
Verizon said the HTC Droid Eris will be in stores tomorrow for $100 with a two-year contract.
