Verizon plans to launch the Samsung Omnia 2, a Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone with one of the largest touch screen displays, on December 2 for $200.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier said the Omnia 2 has a 3.7-inch widescreen touch screen that uses AMOLED technology for added brightest and clarity. The screen turns into a virtual QWERTY keyboard with "Swype" technology for faster text messaging -- with one continuous finger motion across the screen keyboard. The Omnia 2 runs on Microsoft's new Windows Mobile 6.5 platform for an updated look, redesigned Internet Explorer Mobile browser, added access to Facebook and Twitter and a free service called "My Phone" that synchronizes contacts, text messages, photos and data on the Web, so users can edit or transfer files more easily. It also connects to Microsoft's online app store, similar to Apple's popular iPhone marketplace. Additional features include a 5.0-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet, support for Divx and Xvid movie files, Bluetooth wireless technology and 8GB of internal memory with a microSD slot. Verizon said the Samsung Omnia 2 will hit store shelves on December 2 for $200 with a two-year contract.
