Motorola said it has invested in a company that makes software to potentially convert any device into a touch screen unit.
The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company said Sensitive Object, a spinoff of the French National Center for Scientific Research, has developed technology that can analyze acoustic waves from the point of contact on a screen, giving any device touch screen capabilities. For Motorola, touch screen technology is increasingly vital as it looks to catch up to rivals Apple and Research in Motion in the quickly expanding smartphone market. Last year, Motorola hired Qualcomm COO Sanjay Jha, to head its struggling handset business, pinning its hopes on smartphones powered by Google's Android platform -- such as the Droid for Verizon and Cliq for T-Mobile. Motorola did not disclose the details of the investment.
