Google is talking with T-Mobile about the possibility of selling the Nexus One, its upcoming smartphone, at a discounted price for consumers that sign up for the carrier's service.
In recent days, the Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet giant has given a version of the new handset to its employees, seeking feedback before its launch early next year. The company had said it plans to take a new, and potentially risky, approach to selling its handsets -- direct to consumers through its Web site rather than through carriers with heavy subsidies. But now Google is also looking to line up carriers to help sell its smartphone -- similar to the model rival Apple uses to sell its popular iPhone in AT&T stores in addition to its own Web site. The potential deal would allow consumers who sign up for T-Mobile service to buy the Nexus One at a discounted price. Among the major carriers, T-Mobile has the longest-standing partnership with Google. Late last year, the carrier began selling the T-Mobile G1 -- Google's first Android smartphone. Since then, T-Mobile has released three more Android-based devices -- the Motorola Cliq, Samsung Behold 2 and T-Mobile MyTouch 3G -- more than any other wireless operator. Google is also discussing similar terms with other carriers.
