AT&T said it plans to sell five smartphones running Google's Android software from Dell, HTC and Motorola in the first half of this year, bringing what could be Apple's greatest rival to the market dominated by the iPhone.
Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, AT&T's Chief Executive Ralph de la Vega also said that the company plans to sell handsets using Palm's WebOS software in the first half of the year.Palm currently offers two devices running that operating system, the Pre and the Pixi, both exclusively for Sprint. Google's platform is shaping up to be the Apple's iPhone strongest challenger. With AT&T's announcement, all four major U.S. carriers will offer smartphones running Android. Currently, there are around 20 such handsets on the market, including Motorola's new Backflip and HTC and Google's own Nexus One -- both announced earlier this week.
