Palm said it plans to sell the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, two upgraded versions of its smartphones, through Verizon on January 25, expanding its reach to more consumers.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based handset maker said the new handsets offer a simplified WebOS interface and differ only slightly from their predecessors. The Pre Plus retains its 3.1-inch touch screen display and slide-out keyboard, 3.0-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi and stereo Bluetooth, but now comes with 16GB of built-in storage -- twice as much as the original Pre. The Pixi Plus keeps the same touch screen and keyboard, 2.0-megapixel camera, music player, dual speakers and 8GB of storage, but now adds Wi-Fi connectivity. Palm had only sold the Pre and Pixi devices through Sprint, but the company has been losing market share to rivals Apple's iPhone, Research in Motion's BlackBerry and more recently, smartphones running Google's Android software. By releasing through Verizon, Palm hopes to reach a larger customer base. AT&T also said it would start carrying phones running WebOS in the first half of this year. Verizon didn't mention the pricing for the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, but said they would hit store shelves on January 25.
