AT&T said it is cutting the price of its calling plans, bringing them closer in line to rival Verizon, as competition heats up between the two largest U.S. carriers.
After Verizon moved first to drop the price of its unlimited calling plan from $100 a month to $70, AT&T followed suit with a similar change to its plan. The Dallas, Texas-based company said its unlimited calling and data plans for smartphones now costs $100 a month -- down from $130 -- and the same as Verizon's unlimited plan. Unlimited text messaging costs an additional $20. Both companies are lowering calling prices but requiring more subscribers to pay for data services, a move that eases pressure on their data networks with the growing popularity of Internet-capable phones. AT&T said it will now require all subscribers buying mid- to high-tier phones to pay at least $20 extra a month for texting or data services. Verizon customers with phones capable of downloading video and other multimedia content are required to sign up for a $10 a month data plan. Its users with a high-end smartphone, which can run applications and surf the Web, already have to pay $30 a month for an unlimited data plan. Last month, AT&T and Verizon agreed to drop lawsuits accusing each other of misleading viewers with TV ads, but Verizon said it would continue its marketing blitz that compares Verizon's coverage with AT&T's. AT&T said its new rates will take effect Monday.
