Motorola plans to launch the Roi, a Android-powered smartphone with an 8.0-megapixel camera that records HD videos, in Korea this quarter, with the U.S. following shortly thereafter in March.
The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company said the Roi has an improved 8.0-megapixel camera that shoots photos and HD videos at 720p-resolution -- viewable on an HDTV through its built-in HDMI port. The handset also has a large 3.7-inch WVGA capacitive touch screen with five ways of entering text -- using a 3x4 keypad, full QWERTY, half QWERTY, hand writing or writing pad. It comes with Terrestrial DMB to view up to 24 channels of live television, a more common feature among devices in Asia. After falling behind to rivals Apple and BlackBerry, Motorola restructured its handset business around Google's new Android platform. Last October, Motorola said it will release over 20 smartphones in 2010, adding to the growing group of Android devices such as Verizon's Droid and T-Mobile's Cliq. Co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha said the company also plans to make an Android device for Google to sell directly to consumers -- a business model similar to the Internet search giant's own Nexus One touch screen device, which it plans to sell directly on its Web site. Motorola said the Roi will initially be sold in Korea by SK Telecom in the first quarter with worldwide availability, including a North American model for the U.S., shortly thereafter in March.
