Sony Ericsson posted a narrower fourth-quarter loss as new smartphones and lower costs helped lift its slumping sales, indicating that the company may be slowly progressing in its turnaround plans.
The company, a joint venture between Sweden's Ericsson and Japan's Sony, reported a shrinking loss of $236 million, compared to $264 million in the same quarter last year. But sales plunged 40 percent, in part due to a swift shift in consumer demand to touch screen devices, as the company was caught off guard and focused on mid-range music and camera phones. Last year, Sony Ericsson cut thousands of jobs as it struggled amid competition from Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices. "We will continue to focus on returning the company to profitability by establishing Sony Ericsson as the communication entertainment brand," said Bert Nordberg, Sony Ericsson's new Chief Executive. In July, the company said it planned to develop high-end smartphones using Android on the Xperia X10, Windows Mobile on the Xperia X2 and Symbian on the Viviaz.
