LG Turns Profit, to Release 20 Smartphones This Year

LG Electronics reported a fourth quarter profit and said it plans to launch 20 smartphones -- most of them running Google's Android software -- amid a recovering global economy and increasing consumer demand.
The South Korean company posted a $256 million profit for the October-December period, reversing a $487 million loss from the same quarter a year ago. But results still fell short of analysts' expectations of $344 million.
The company said it plans to "aggressively" challenge established rivals Apple and Research in Motion by releasing around 20 smartphones -- most of them running Google's Android software -- later this year.
LG, the world's third-largest handset maker, entered the smartphone industry relatively late, but has been busy ramping up its presence by focusing on high-end devices. It said it aims to sell 140 million handsets in 2010, up 20 percent from last year ago. Analysts expect the company to continue its gain on market leaders Nokia and Samsung.
