Struggling phone maker Motorola today said the Cliq XT -- a compact Google smartphone with access to Facebook and Twitter -- will launch for T-Mobile in the coming months.
The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company said the Cliq XT, like the original Cliq announced last October, features a 3.1-inch touch screen display, 5.0-megapixel camera and MotoBlur software that combines contact information from Facebook, Twitter and email accounts into one convenient view.It also runs Google Android software, for access to Google Search, Google Voice Search, Google Talk, Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and Android Market. In recent years, Motorola suffered severe losses after heavily focusing on its Razr handset when consumer demand had shifted to devices with more robust features, such as touch screen smartphones. In 2008, the embattled company hired former Qualcomm executive Sanjay Jha to take the helm of its failing mobile devices business. He restructured the handset division around the development of Google Android smartphones in August, betting that the partnership with the Internet giant would help it regain lost market share from iPhone-maker Apple, BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion and Nokia in the fast-growing smartphone segment. While its first two Google products, the Cliq for T-Mobile and Droid for Verizon, were met with moderate success, the company has been aggressively pushing forward and expanding its portfolio with over 20 smartphones this year, including a, yet unannounced, Google device to be sold directly to consumers on its own Web site -- a distribution model that Apple and Google uses for its iPhone and Nexus One handsets. The highlight of Motorola's Android strategy is its MotoBlur software -- an interface that grabs updates from Facebook and Twitter and combines it with contacts, emails and text messages that is shown in the home screen for one convenient view. Contacts, messages and log-in information is also securely backed up on a MotoBlur server, so users can erase data from a lost or stolen handset through an online Web site or retrieve it later on. Earlier last month, Motorola showed some signs of life by swinging to a fourth-quarter profit, indicating that it may be on its way to a comeback. It said it plans to combine its handset and set-top box businesses into one group -- to deliver digital video and content to smartphones -- which it hopes to spin off into a publicly traded company. Motorola said the Cliq XT is expected to ship for T-Mobile in the first quarter this year. Pricing information has not yet been released.
