AT&T to Sell Motorola Backflip Android Phone for $100

AT&T will finally jump onto the Google bandwagon when it begins selling the Motorola Backflip, its first smartphone based on the Internet giant's Android software, on March 7 for $100.
The Dallas, Texas-based operator is the last of the four major carriers to sell an Android device, which competes with Apple's popular iPhone -- also sold by the company.Seen by some analysts as a hedge against losing its exclusive deal to carry the iPhone, AT&T said the Backflip is the first of five Android-based smartphones it will launch in the first half of this year. Unveiled last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Backflip features Motorola's new MotoBlur user interface, which focuses on social-networking. It also comes with a 5.0-megapixel camera, a QWERTY keyboard that "flips back" from the screen and a unique track pad that works like a PC mouse. Last year, Motorola reorganized its entire handset business around Google's operating system, betting that the platform would help it reverse a downward spiral to smartphone specialists Apple, Nokia and BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion. AT&T said it will begin selling the Backflip for $100 with a two-year service contract on March 7.
