T-Mobile reported a fall in earnings, despite adding 371,000 new customers in the last quarter, due to gains in its lower-paying prepaid business.
The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier said it signed 488,000 prepaid customers, but lost 117,000 more-valuable contract users, for a total of 33.8 million year-end subscribers -- a major concern as postpaid consumers increasingly turn to rivals who offer more robust data services for smartphones. The company said its net income slid to $306 million from $483 million in the fourth quarter, with revenue dropping to $5.41 billion from $5.72 billion, due mainly to intensified price cuts in voice and text-messaging services. Meanwhile, Verizon and AT&T have added millions postpaid customers as they race to build out their new fourth-generation, or 4G, wireless networks. Suffering from perceptions that its data network is inferior, T-Mobile is hoping to reverse its slide by building a 4G network of its own to compete for higher-paying smartphone buyers with data plans. Earlier this month, its parent company, Deutsche Telekom, was considering a spinoff or public offering to help fund its network expansion. "An initial public offering could be an option, but it's not necessary," said Timotheus Hoettges, Deutsche Telekom's chief financial officer. T-Mobile, the fourth-largest U.S. wireless operator, has a mere 14 percent market, trailing far behind leaders AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.
