The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said the new operating system also prolongs battery life, quickens software launch time and improves the performance for some apps. An LED light alerts users when new messages -- such as email, appointments and voicemails -- arrive, even when the handset display is off.The update comes as Palm struggles with stagnant sales of its flagship devices. Its stock price plummeted 34.5 percent after projection fell well below analysts' expectations. Palm said WebOS 1.4 will be automatically pushed to smartphones over the next few days, but Verizon and Sprint users can manually upgrade their devices through the Update application.
