Nokia plans to release the C5, a stainless steel handset running Symbian software and the first device from the company's new C-series portfolio, in the second quarter for $180.
The Finnish company said the new C-series range will focus on personal social networking. The C5 features an improved phone book that links to Facebook, so users can see status updates on their home screen. It also has a 2.2-inch display with 16.7 million colors, a 3.2-megapixel camera to take photos and videos that can be uploaded to YouTube, an MP3 player and stereo FM radio and free Ovi Maps navigation software for walking and driving directions. In January, the handset maker said it would give away its mapping software for free, matching Google's move to give away its mapping app for Android late last year. Late last month, Nokia and Intel announced a partnership to launch "MeeGo," a new mobile operating system for high-end smartphones to be released later this year. After a tough recent months and increased competition from smartphone specialists Apple, Research in Motion and newcomer Google, the embattled company posted a strong fourth-quarter profit -- up 65 percent -- fueled in large part to gains in its Symbian platform and a surge in smartphone market share to 40 percent from 35 percent. Nokia said the C5 will ship to Europe and Asia in the second quarter at a price of $180.
