Luxury mobile phone brand Gresso has released a handset made from red crocodile skin, specifically designed for women, costing $2,800.
The Russia-based company said the new handset, part of its "Grand Monaco" collection, is crafted from a titanium-alloy material, covered with several layers of high-tech ceramics, then burnished with micro particles to give it a shine. It comes with a 42-carat hand-polished sapphire crystal, a battery cover with a magnetic "smart" lock and a keyboard made from scratch-proof steel, using micro-level technology to ensure the accuracy of every last detail. Last year, Gresso unveiled a Formula One-inspired device, made of high-performance materials used in racing cars, and a handset with diamond accents. In the past few years, fashion retailers -- such as Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Prada and Versace -- have teamed up with handset makers to use their brand to broaden its appeal beyond clothes. Even Danish audio maker Bang and Olufsen and Swiss watch maker Tag Heuer have released mobile devices in an attempt to boost revenues. In 2008, Vertu, the largest luxury handset maker, collaborated with French jewelry house Boucheron to design a $30,000 phone crafted from a solid block of gold. Gresso said the Grand Monaco in croc skin is available from its dealers for $2,800.
