Verizon said it has released an update for the Motorola Droid -- adding multi-touch pinch-to-zoom capabilities and live wallpapers -- on the latest Android 2.1 software.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier said the new update also adds a new Gallery feature to view photos in a 3D layout, Google Maps for navigation, news and weather widgets and improves the handset audio. The company said the platform release and will be automatically pushed to users starting today, rolled out in batches of 250,000. The Droid, featuring a touch screen and slide-out keyboard, was seen by many analysts as Motorola's answer to Apple's iPhone and last hope to revive sagging sales. In recent months, the embattled company has shown some signs of life, swinging to a fourth-quarter profit and rapidly expanding its portfolio of smartphones -- with plans to release around 20 devices this year alone, including a Google-powered phone sold directly to consumers -- in the coming year.
