Verizon plans to sell the LG Fathom, a Windows Mobile smartphone with a touch screen display, slide-out keyboard and global roaming capabilities, next week for $150 with a two-year contract.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier said the Fathom features a speedy 1GHz processor and Microsoft's latest Windows Mobile 6.5 software for access to Office Mobile apps to view and edit document, send and receive email and chat on AOL, Windows Mobile and Yahoo clients. It features a large 3.2-inch touch screen display with vibration feedback and a full QWERTY keyboard, a built-in 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera and MP3 player, Wi-Fi connectivity and global CDMA/GSM roaming with high-speed EV-DO/HSDPA Internet access. Customers can also get worldwide turn-by-turn directions through VZ Navigator Global. LG, the world's third-largest handset maker, has seen its mobile phone business suffer after depending on cheaper phones to drive profits when consumer tastes transitioned to smartphones. The Fathom is one of several devices running mobile operating systems the company plans to launch in the coming months, including several Google Android phones for Verizon. Earlier today, the company also unveiled the Vu Plus, a television-capable handset for AT&T. Verizon said the LG Fathom is available for in stores on June 3.
