Sony Ericsson today unveiled three new phones, the Android-based Xperia X8 and the basic Cedar and Yendo devices, and announced plans to upgrade the X10, as the beleaguered handset maker looks to push its recent return to profitability.
The Japanese-Swedish joint venture said the Xperia X8 is a cheaper version of its flagship X10. It runs Google's Android operating system and features a 3.0-inch screen and a 3.2-megapixel camera. The Cedar, meanwhile, has a 2.0-megapixel camera and is made from recycled materials, while the Yendo is the company's first touch screen phone with Walkman music capabilities. All three handsets will be launched in the third quarter. Sony Ericsson, the world's fourth-largest phone maker, has been struggling in recent quarters, partly due to a lack of appealing smartphones. The company, which turned a surprise profit earlier this year, also said its plans to upgrade the software on the X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro in the coming months. The smartphones will run Android 2.1, while the X10 will also get high-definition video recording and the option to connect wirelessly to a television.
