After taking 600,000 preorders for the new iPhone 4 on the first day of availability, Apple and AT&T said they will stop taking advanced reservations amid overwhelming demand that crippled its computer systems.
"It was the largest number of preorders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions," Apple said in a statement. "We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock."AT&T also said it had halted reservations of the iPhone 4, just one day after it had started taking names, due to unexpectedly high demand and inventory issues. "We are suspending the orders in order to fulfill the orders we've already received," AT&T said in a statement. The company said it may start taking reservations before the launched on June 24, depending on availability. The stoppage comes a day after crushing traffic paralyzed AT&T and Apple's websites, leaving many customers unable to preorder the new iPhone.
