Early iPhone 4 Owners Report Antenna Issues, Dropped Calls

Some new iPhone 4 owners are complaining that holding the device in a certain way can interfere with reception and lead to dropped calls.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company's customer support website has been filling up with posts about dropped calls caused by covering small black lines on the antenna band with their hand. While some users reported no problems at all, others say the issue is intermittent.Apple did not appear overly worried and said that such issues are "a fact of life for every wireless phone." "Just avoid holding it in that way," said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive. He added that people should stop blocking the sensitive part with their hands or buy a case. "Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas," said Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesman. "If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases." Apple, ironically, redesigned the iPhone 4 to have better reception. The stainless steel band that wraps around the sides of the device acts like a sturdy skeleton to anchor the phone and it also doubles as the device's antenna, which is supposed to pull in a stronger signal.
