Google is rolling out an upgrade of its Android mobile operating system to owners of the Nexus One this week, with other phones scheduled to receive the update shortly thereafter.
The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said the new software, version 2.2, improves the speed of some tasks -- up to five times faster than 2.1 -- and adds enhancements to the camera and gallery and automatic software updates. The upgrade comes as rival Apple launches its new iPhone 4. With the update, Android users will also be able to turn their phone into a mobile hotspot for Internet tethering and view websites that use Adobe's Flash -- features that are absent from the iPhone 4. While Google hasn't detailed its roll out plans for other Android devices, the company has said handsets from HTC, Galaxy S phones from Samsung and Droid smartphones from Verizon will receive the update in the near future.
