Microsoft plans to kill Kin One and Kin Two phones less than two months after the products went on sale in the U.S, in part due to weak sales and to focus on the upcoming Windows Phone 7 software.
The Redmond, Wash.-based company said that it won't ship its two Kin devices to Europe as planned this fall. Verizon, meanwhile, will sell the remaining stock in the U.S.Microsoft added that employees who worked on the Kin project will instead focus on Windows Phone 7, a new mobile operating system expected to be released by the holiday season. The company didn't give a reason for halting the project, but people familiar with the situation said that the timing of Kin's arrival was off and sales hadn't met Microsoft's expectations. During the years Kin was in development, smartphones became significantly more sophisticated with extra applications for download. The two phones were aimed at teenagers and young adults who wanted a constant stream of updates from social-networking sites like Facebook. In May, Microsoft said it would be shaking up the division responsible for Windows Mobile devices, amid increasingly crippling assaults from Apple's iPhone and Google's Android devices. Apple recently overtook Microsoft to become the world's largest tech company by market value.
