HTC Profits Surge 33 Percent on Strong Sales

The Taiwan-based company -- maker of the Aria for AT&T, Evo 4G for Sprint, HD2 for T-Mobile, and Droid Incredible for Verizon -- said its profit was $268 million for the April-June quarter, up from $202 million a year earlier.

Meanwhile, its revenue surged 58 percent to a record $1.88 billion in the second quarter, up from $1.19 billion a year ago.

HTC, initially a contract manufacturer of phones, has attempted to separate itself from the crowded market of Android devices by taking a page from Apple's playbook -- focusing as much on design as on hardware.

The company now has the rare trifecta of making flagship phones for three of the top four U.S. wireless carriers. The fourth operator, AT&T, is firmly committed to Apple's iPhone.

After acquiring One & Co., a 20-person San Francisco design firm, HTC began heavily investing resources to increase brand awareness and to better compete with established phone makers. It currently ranks behind larger smartphone rivals Nokia, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, iPhone maker Apple and Motorola in the global smartphone rankings.

Earlier last month, HTC bought Abaxia, a French firm that develops mobile applications, highlighting its strategic shift to enhance software and design capabilities.
