Verizon today released the Samsung Intensity 2, an eco-friendly phone with a slide-out keyboard, for $50 with a two-year contract.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier said the Intensity 2 is designed for convenient text messaging and social networking. It features a large 2.2-inch display and bundles "Social Beat," an application lets people keep in touch with friends through Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
As the successor to the original Intensity released last year, the new phone features a similar 1.3-megapixel camera with night vision, music player and Bluetooth technology, packaged in a greener exterior that is made from recycled water bottles -- 35 percent post-consumer materials.
"We're excited about the Intensity 2 launch because a major part of Verizon's sustainability strategy is providing products that utilize post-consumer materials," said Jim Gowen, Verizon's chief sustainability officer.
Earlier this week, Verizon and Samsung released the Haven, a budget phone for the elderly. It also posted a loss for latest quarter, as a result of a buyout of 11,000 employees.
