T-Mobile plans to sell the BlackBerry Curve 3G, a high-speed device with a full keyboard and optical trackpad, on September 8 for $80 with a two-year contract.
The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier said the Curve 3G is a fast HSDPA world phone with access to BlackBerry Internet Service for support of up to 10 email accounts. It ships with the BlackBerry OS 5 but is "6 ready" when Research in Motion pushes out the new software in the next few months.
The Curve 3G boasts a 2.0-megapixel camera, an advanced media player, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, access to BlackBerry App World and GPS with location-based services by TeleNav. It also comes with a fast 624 MHz processor and 256-megabytes of internal memory with a microSD slot.
"The majority of people in the worldwide mobile phone market have yet to buy their first smartphone and the BlackBerry Curve 3G is designed to provide an extremely attractive and accessible choice that will help convince many of them to make the leap," said Mike Lazaridis, RIM's president and Co-CEO.
RIM has been battling a spate of government bans and demands to access its encrypted data. Earlier last week, Saudi Arabia ordered its wireless carriers to stop BlackBerry service, while the United Arab Emirates said it will start blocking BlackBerry services in October. On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stepped into the fray to help resolve conflicts.
Recently RIM unveiled the Torch, its first touch screen device with a slide-out keyboard, for AT&T.
