Verizon today announced that the long-awaited Motorola Droid 2, an Android-powered smartphone with a slide-out keyboard, will be released on Thursday for $200 with a two-year contract.
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier said the Droid 2 features a large 3.7-inch touch screen display -- ideal for watching movies from Blockbuster's "On Demand" service -- and a 5.0-megapixel camera with DVD-quality video recording.
It comes with high-speed EV-DO technology, a pinch-to-zoom Web browser with Flash 10.1 support, and can turn into a "mobile hotspot" unit, similar to a wireless router, to connect up to five other Wi-Fi compatible devices.
Running a fast 1-gigahertz processor and Google's Android 2.2 operating system, the Droid 2 comes bundled with the Internet search giant's applications, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps with Street View, Google Quick Search and Android Market to download from more than 70,000 programs.
Additional features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and 8-gigabytes of on-board memory with an 8-gigabyte microSD card.
"The Droid 2 is a big leap forward from the original Droid," said Bill Ogle, Motorola's chief marketing officer. "We listened to consumers and are providing a new keyboard, increased processing power, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and 3G mobile hotspot capabilities."
After struggling to make the transition to smartphones, Motorola has bet its turnaround on a partnership with Verizon and Google. The company, which last month released its Droid X to much success, said it was also developing a 2-gigahertz superphone.
Verizon, meanwhile, said it will start taking pre-orders of the Droid 2 on its website starting tomorrow. In addition, it will sell a limited edition R2-D2 version of the phone to celebrate the Star Wars films. The special phone, which features exclusive Star Wars content and external hardware designed to look like the trusty Droid, will be available online in September.
