The industry group behind the WiMax standard said it plans to release its new technology, capable of download speeds of 100-megabits-per-second, in 2012.
The WiMax Forum said its WiMax 2 standard, previously called 802.16m, will be finalized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, in November. Products based on the technology are scheduled to be certified through 2011 with commercial release dates beginning in 2012.
The group said WiMax 2 will be backwards-compatible with current WiMax standards and offer speeds that are 20 times faster than present technologies.
Currently, only Clearwire, the data network company mostly owned by Sprint, operates a 4G network based on WiMax. Other carriers are using rival technology Long-Term Evolution, or LTE.
Earlier this month, Clearwire announced plans to simultaneously test a LTE network, in addition to WiMax.
"We don't think it would be detrimental if Clearwire decided to run both WiMax and LTE," said Declan Byrne, the WiMax Forum's director or marketing. "In some ways it might be positive for both WiMax and LTE because it would take some of the sting out of the 'either-or' dynamic that a lot of people have been setting up when talking about the two technologies."
The WiMax Forum said the standard has a radius limit of 31 square miles per access point, about the same distance as WiMax.
