Samsung said Monday that it has shipped over a million Galaxy S smartphones during the device's first 45 days in the United States.
That number only includes the Captivate, released through AT&T, and the Vibrant, released through T-Mobile. Samsung will be releasing a Galaxy S handset through Sprint, called the Epic 4G, starting Tuesday. The Fascinate for Verizon is scheduled to launch next week. All Galaxy S devices run on the Android operating system.
"Bringing Galaxy S devices to multiple carriers has given Samsung Mobile the opportunity to reach millions of consumers," said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile.
Earlier this year, Samsung displaced Motorola to become a major smartphone contender and is now the number-five global vendor. In the mobile phone market, Samsung took a 20.1 percent market share by selling 65.32 million devices in the year's second quarter, an increase from 55.43 million handsets and a 19.3 percent share in the same quarter last year.
The Galaxy S currently seems to be the popular Android alternative to Apple's iPhone, which sold 3.2 million units in the three months through June. Apple has said it sold 1.7 million of the iPhone 4 in three days this summer, but that includes sales in five countries.
Smartphones running the Android operating system have seemed to be gaining in popularity overall, and the Galaxy S has a store of free apps available through the Android Market, whereas Apple's App Store carries primarily paid apps. Samsung has been also been heavily promoting the device's many messaging, social-networking and entertainment capabilities via social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Android-powered phones also may be benefiting from the antenna problems plaguing Apple's iPhone 4 as well as data-congestion and connectivity issues that have plagued exclusive iPhone provider AT&T. As a result, many early generation iPhone owners are delaying an upgrade to the iPhone 4 and have taken an interest in Android devices in the meanwhile.
With one million units shipped in 45 days, Samsung's Galaxy S seems to be catching on with consumers. The momentum should only continue, especially with the release of the Epic 4G for Sprint and the upcoming Fascinate for Verizon.
