Sony Ericsson estimates that China will be its largest handset market in the next three to four years as it looks to increase its share of the country.
The Japanese-Swedish joint venture said that smartphone use in China would reach 50 percent of all mobile phone users in the country by 2015.
"People want smartphones and affordability will be there because smartphones will quickly go down in price range," said Bert Nordberg, global president of Sony Ericsson.
Sony Ericsson said the recently launched the A8i, an Android-powered smartphone that runs on China's propretary 3G TD-SCDMA network, is the first device in a larger strategy to develop handsets for the region.
While the price will be determined by China Mobile, the handset maker will roll out future smartphones to cover a broader customer base and wider price ranges.
Sony Ericsson still lags behind Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Motorola with a 9.3 percent of China's smartphone market in the second quarter.
China reportedly had 814 million mobile phone users at the end of July.
