Apple today unveiled a new version of its iTunes software that includes "Ping," a social networking feature similar to services from Facebook and Twitter.
"Facebook and Twitter meets iTunes," said Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive. "But it's not Facebook, it's not Twitter. It's a social network all about music."
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company said Ping is intended for "social music discovery," allowing users to find friends, acquaintances and public figures and show their stream of updates, such as iTunes purchases. In addition, Ping can generate a personalized top-10 list based on what their friends buy or listen to.
"I think we'll see many many millions of people get involved in that because of the ability to just hang out and talk about music with friends," said Philip Schiller, Apple's marketing head.
Apple said Ping is not mandatory and customers can choose to keep their iTunes actions private.
The new feature is Apple's first step into social networking after integrating technology from music startup Lala.com, which it bought last year.
Earlier today, Apple also re-introduced Apple TV, a smaller, cheaper Web-to-TV service, unveiled a revamped line of iPod products and announced an update to its iOS operating system that adds the ability to play multi-player social games.
