Apple is releasing a software update for the iPhone next week, adding the ability to play games with friends online and upload high-definition videos to YouTube through Wi-Fi.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company said the iOS 4.1 update also improves the quality of photos taken with the iPhone and iPod Touch, and fixes problems related to the proximity sensor, Bluetooth and 3G performance.
The software allows users connect, for free, to its new multi-player social gaming network, called "Game Center." The new platform lets users invite friends to play a game, start a mult-iplayer game through matchmaking, track their achievements and compare their high scores on a leaderboard.
Additional features include the ability to "rent" television shows from iTunes for 99-cents per episode and take advantage of Apple's new social discovery tool, called "Ping," to see what friends are listening to.
The update will work with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G devices.
The iPad, which runs an older version of iOS, will also receive an update to catch up to its smaller siblings, gaining multi-tasking capabilities and wireless printing, however, the improvement won't reach owners until November.
Earlier today, Apple announced its new Apple TV initiative, updated iTunes software with social networking and unveiled a revamped line of iPod products.
