Chip maker ARM today unveiled a super-fast processor for next-generation smartphones and tablets, delivering five-times better performance than today's advanced mobile devices.
The British company said its Cortex-A15 processor, codenamed "Eagle," comes in 1.0- to 1.5-gigahertz versions for smartphones and tablets. It also supports 3D navigation, high-speed broadband and augmented reality.
Meanwhile, a scaled-up 2.5-gigahertz variant, in a quad-core format, will be used in servers and home entertainment devices.
"The Cortex-A15 processor marks the beginning of an entirely new era for the ARM," said Mike Inglis, executive vice president of ARM's processor division. "It brings together more than 20 years of expertise in low-power design with a host of new and very aggressive high-performance technologies."
Rather than making its own chips, ARM focuses on designing processors that it licenses to manufacturers. Its products, such as Apple's A4 chip, which is in the iPhone 4 and iPad, are used in over 95 of the world's phones.
But consumers will have to wait a few years before the A15 reaches them. ARM said Texas Instruments, Samsung and ST-Ericsson will be the first chip makers to receive its designs, with sample units expected to be sent to manufacturers next year.
Earlier this week, Samsung announced its latest processor, a dual-core unit, with features for high-definition video on smartphones.
