T-Mobile is giving any phone — including its high-end G2 and MyTouch 4G smartphones — with a two-year contract on February 11 and 12, as part of a Valentine’s Day sale, featuring TV personality Khloe Kardashian.
The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier said any of its 30 devices will be available for free with qualifying two-year contracts at its retail stores. T-Mobile is also working with Kardashian to produce special Valentine’s video that will be posted on its YouTube and Facebook pages on February 9.
“Our Valentine’s promotion makes it easier for anyone to get their favorite smartphone,” said John Clelland, T-Mobile’s senior vice president of marketing.
The offer is part of T-Mobile’s effort to battle Verizon and AT&T’s flurry of new iPhone subscribers. With both rivals selling Apple’s popular device, T-Mobile and Sprint have had little choice but to compete on price, offering cheaper deals and data plans to lure cost-conscious customers.
In the meantime, T-Mobile is looking to bolster its 4G service, doubling network speeds within the year. The company is also looking to buy addition wireless spectrum to upgrade its infrastructure to Long-Term Evolution, or LTE, an even faster standard.
Earlier this week, T-Mobile was reportedly considering selling some of its broadcast cellular towers for funds to bid in a federal auction. It could also buy wireless spectrum from Clearwire, which is mostly owned by Sprint. The two companies are close to closing the deal, which could link the embattled companies in a partnership of necessity to take on Verizon and AT&T.
