A pair of investment firms have agreed to acquire Alltel Corp., the fifth-biggest U.S. wireless company and owner of the nation's largest geographic network, in a deal worth $27.5 billion.
The telecommunications company announced Sunday that it had signed an agreement to be acquired by TPG Capital, formerly Texas Pacific Group, and GS Capital Partners, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs.

Alltel Wireless and Motorola today announced that KRZR K1m, the latest in the RAZR family of wireless phones, is available online starting Oct. 2 and available in Alltel retail stores nationwide on Oct. 5.
The Motorola KRZR K1m features a dark pearl gray glass finish and refined metal keyboard. Exterior touch-sensitive controls enable users to control their music while the flip phone is closed. An optional microSD memory card provides up to 1 GB of removable storage.

Alltel has announced a deal to distribute some of XM Satellite Radio's commercial-free channels over cell phones.

Alltel Wireless and Melodeo today launched Axcess Mobilcast service, allowing customers to easily search and listen to thousands of podcasts on their wireless phones for a monthly subscription of $3.99.
Axcess Mobilcast offers continuously updated podcast episodes and radio shows from popular sources such as NPR and CNN, as well as thousands of independent podcasts from all over the world. Sprint and Cingular today announced expanded roaming agreements with rival Alltel.
The Sprint and Alltel 10-year agreement is effective July 1, 2006, and encompasses CDMA voice, data and EV-DO high-speed mobile data services.
Alltel also said that it had also expanded a roaming agreement with Cingular Wireless, a venture of AT&T Inc. and BellSouth Corp. until 2012.

Alltel and Midwest Wireless Holdings today announced they have entered into a definitive agreement for Alltel to purchase Midwest Wireless. Alltel expects to gain approximately 400,000 wireless customers in southern Minnesota, northern and eastern Iowa, and western Wisconsin. These markets are contiguous to existing Alltel operations and cover a population of 1.9 million with 850 MHz.

Alltel and Motorola announced today that the Motorola RAZR V3c will be available at Alltel stores nationwide starting Monday. Customers can watch live television on the new CDMA EVDO handset through MobiTV.

Alltel today announced it has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice related to the company's pending merger with Western Wireless Corporation.
Under the agreement, Alltel will divest 16 markets in Arkansas, Kansas and Nebraska now owned and operated by Western Wireless.
