Amid growing consumer interest in PC-based music downloading and the expanding availability of mobile entertainment options, new research from global marketing research firm Ipsos-Insight shows that an increasing proportion of Americans are using their mobile phones to download ringtones and are beginning to sample other mobile entertainment content.

Drivers who use cellular phones while operating their vehicles are at an increased risk of crashing, according to a recent study commissioned by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The fourfold increase in crash likelihood was consistent among drivers, with male and female drivers experiencing similar levels of risk, as well as senior drivers and drivers under 30. The IIHS study underscores the need for 21st Century Insurance's public safety billboards, which remind drivers to put down their cell phone and "Just Drive."

Sprint today announced its voice-dialing service, Sprint PCS Voice Command, is available for free to customers who are blind, visually impaired or physically disabled. The free service, which allows calls to be dialed by speaking the desired contact or phone number, also includes 10 free directory assistance calls per month. Sprint PCS Voice Command is currently available to Sprint customers for $5 a month.

In South Africa, a local doctor has invented a pill bottle that uses cell phone technology to remind patients to take their medication. Named the SIMpill, the device targets patients taking medication for long-term diseases; who missing a dose can have potentially life-threatening consequences.

Ferrite beads, commonly used in computers to stop interference, can be used to reduce handsfree cell phone radiation to almost zero, claimed Professor Lawrie Challis, chairman of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme in the UK. By clipping a ferrite bead on wires leading up the wire to the head, radio waves can be stopped. Costing only a few cents, he called for the cell phone industry to start using them as the standard.

Results from a University of York study showed using hands-free headsets reduce cell phone radiation by as much as 47%. The study, part of the UK's Mobile Telecommunications Health Research program, concluded that radiation was cut by nearly half when using a wired hands-free kit running up from the torso, rather than directly talking on a phone against the head.
