Drivers who use cellular phones while operating their vehicles are at an increased risk of crashing, according to a recent study commissioned by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The fourfold increase in crash likelihood was consistent among drivers, with male and female drivers experiencing similar levels of risk, as well as senior drivers and drivers under 30. The IIHS study underscores the need for 21st Century Insurance's public safety billboards, which remind drivers to put... [Continue reading Study Finds Cell Phone Users 4 Times More Likely to Crash]

Is there a link between cell phones and brain tumors? Over the past 15 years, there has been growing concern about this possibility. Part of this concern stems from the fact that there are over one billion cell phone subscribers worldwide, and the number is increasing.
The National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF), a non-profit patient organization, is addressing this question in its latest newsletter. Stefan Lonn, PhD, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, authored the cover artic... [Continue reading National Brain Tumor Foundation Tackles Cell Phone Radiation]

Amid a growing body of studies indicating that cell phones may cause health hazards to adults and children a revolutionary new invention has been introduced that offers protection from harmful electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
This is welcome news since a recent 2005 study by the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), a UK Based independent research organization, advised parents not to let children under the age of eight use cell phones.
The cell chip was created in light of a number ... [Continue reading Cell Chip Protects Users From Phone Radiation]

Involving over 1,000 participants, a Danish study published in the journal of Neurology concluded that cell phones do not increase the risk of developing a brain tumor.
However, the authors say long-term research is still needed due to the new technology. Handsfree devices were recommended to cut amounts of radiation present, while limited use was suggested for children.
Lead by Dr. Christoffer Johansen at the Danish Cancer Registry, the pan-European study questioned 427 people with brain ... [Continue reading Study Shows Cell Phones Don't Cause Brain Tumors]

A University of Utah study concludes that young drivers talking on cell phones drive like the elderly; moving and reacting slowly with increasing risk of accidents.
Published in this recent journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the study found that 18-25 year olds talking on phones responded just as slowly as 65-74 year olds without phones when reacting to brake lights from vehicles ahead.
"If you put a 20 year old driver behind the wheel with a cell phone, their reaction ti... [Continue reading Study Says Cell Phone Users Drive Like Old Folks]

In South Africa, a local doctor has invented a pill bottle that uses cell phone technology to remind patients to take their medication. Named the SIMpill, the device targets patients taking medication for long-term diseases; who missing a dose can have potentially life-threatening consequences.
When the patented bottle's cap is removed, an electronic chip sends an SMS to a secure central server, including a unique pill box identification number. If the SMS arrives too early or late, a reminde... [Continue reading Cell Phone Technology Reminds Sick To Take Pills]

Ferrite beads, commonly used in computers to stop interference, can be used to reduce handsfree cell phone radiation to almost zero, claimed Professor Lawrie Challis, chairman of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme in the UK. By clipping a ferrite bead on wires leading up the wire to the head, radio waves can be stopped. Costing only a few cents, he called for the cell phone industry to start using them as the standard.
"Using a ferrite bead effectively reduces emissio... [Continue reading Beads Cut Cell Phone Radiation From Handsfree]

Results from a University of York study showed using hands-free headsets reduce cell phone radiation by as much as 47%. The study, part of the UK's Mobile Telecommunications Health Research program, concluded that radiation was cut by nearly half when using a wired hands-free kit running up from the torso, rather than directly talking on a phone against the head.
Dr. Stuart Porter, from the Department of Electronics at the University of York said, "The previous work on measuring the effect of... [Continue reading Headsets Limit Radiation UK Study Says]
