Nokia today said it is offering to buy the 52 percent of Symbian, the consortium that makes the software for its phones. Nokia plans to make it available for free to other manufacturers, in hopes of blunting the influence of competing software providers.

Nokia today said it would start selling a new handset, the 6212 Classic, with integrated Near Field Communication (NFC). Nokia today unveiled its newest Nseries device, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition, taking advantage of new wide-area high-speed mobile WiMAX networks. Delivering an Internet experience similar to fixed broadband technologies, WiMAX typically downloads at speeds of up to 2-4 Mbps per user with peak download speeds of up to 10 Mbps. The N810 WiMAX Edition is expected to be available in the U.S. during the summer of 2008 in areas where WiMAX connectivity is available.
